the dog's name was Laika. The Soviet authorities said Laika died painlessly after a week in orbit but in 2002 new evidence revealed the dog died from over-heating and panic just a few hours after take-off.

In the summer of 2002 I had a meeting with a senior adviser to Bush. The aide said that guys like me were "in what we call the reality-based community," which he defined as people who "believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality." I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. "That's not the way the world really works anymore," he continued. "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality - judiciously, as you will - we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. Dutch film director Theo van Gogh stabbed and shot dead
Van Gogh, 47, had received death threats after his film Submission was shown on Dutch TV. It portrayed violence against women in Islamic societies.
Submission was a 10-minute English-language short and was broadcast at the end of August. it was centred on the stories of four Muslim women who were beaten, raped and forced into marriage, and were asking for Allah's help. It becomes apparent that their chadors and gowns are transparent and their half-naked bodies are visible through their dress. On their bodies are written Koranic verses describing the permitted physical punishments for women who "misbehave".
The film was written by Somali-born Dutch member of parliament Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who has been a strong opponent of Islam's treatment of women. Hirsi Ali has said she wanted to draw attention to the hidden violence of Muslim women, describing some practices as "savage Medieval customs", and show Muslims are the same as everyone when stripped bare.
Van Gogh - who was related to the famous Dutch painter - had also been making a film about Pim Fortuyn, the populist right-wing, anti-immigration politician assassinated in May 2002.

Soho nail bomb survivor murdered
David Morley, 37, a barman who survived the 1999 Soho nail bombing has been murdered in an apparent homophobic attack.
he died on Saturday after he and a friend were badly beaten near London's Hungerford Bridge on the South Bank. Det Ch Insp Nick Scola said of the South Bank attacks: "These crimes are being treated as a homophobic hate crime." Detectives believe the attackers may have sought out people returning home from gay nightclub Heaven in Charing Cross.
back in 1999 David Morley escaped with minor burns after a nail bomb exploded in the gay pub, the Admiral Duncan, where he worked. the bomb injured 73 and killed three.... Nik Moore, 31, and pregnant friend Andrea Dykes, 27, were killed instantly. (her husband Julian, 25, was seriously injured) while John Light, 32, best man at their wedding, died in hospital.
