Trying to monitor the sea of traffic on all the chat channels would be like assigning a police officer to listen in on every conversation on the sidewalk -- virtually impossible. now a Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute computer science professor hopes to develop mathematical models that can uncover structure within the scattershot traffic of online public forums.
Instead of rummaging through megabytes of messages, RPI professor Bulent Yener will use mathematical models in search of patterns in the chatter. Downloading data from selected chat rooms, Yener will track the times that messages were sent, creating a statistical profile of the traffic.
If, for instance, RatBoi and bowler1 consistently send messages within seconds of each other in a crowded chat room, you could infer that they were speaking to one another amid the "noise" of the chat room. "For us, the challenge is to be able to determine, without reading the messages, who is talking to whom," Yener said. In search of "hidden communities,"
Yener also wants to check messages for certain keywords that could reveal something about what's being discussed in groups.

The United States' Disappeared: The CIA's Long-term "Ghost Detainees"
"Disappearances" were a trademark abuse of Latin American military dictatorships in their dirty war on alleged subversion. Now they have become a direct United States tactic in its conflict with al-Qaeda.
At least 11 al-Qaida suspects have "disappeared" in U.S. custody Human Rights Watch said in a 46 page report issued Monday. The prisoners are probably being held outside the United States without access to the Red Cross or any oversight of their treatment, the human rights group said. In some cases, the United States will not even acknowledge the prisoners are in custody.
In refusing to disclose the prisoners' whereabouts or acknowledge the detentions, Human Rights Watch said, the U.S. government has violated international law, international treaties and the Geneva Convention. The group called on the government to bring all the prisoners "under the protection of the law."
"If the United States embraces the torture and ‘disappearance’ of its opponents, it abandons its ideals and international obligations and becomes a lesser nation."said Reed Brody, special counsel for Human Rights Watch.
International treaties ratified by the United States prohibit incommunicado detention of persons in secret locations. The Geneva Conventions require that the International Committee of the Red Cross have access to all detainees and that information on those detained be provided to their relatives. Under international human rights law, detainees must be held in recognized places of detention and be able to communicate with lawyers and family members.

One of America's biggest television companies has announced plans to broadcast a film days before the presidential election that portrays the Democratic candidate John Kerry as betraying his fellow soldiers in Vietnam.
The conservative Sinclair Broadcast Group will reportedly present the film as news on the 62 local channels it owns nationwide and reach up to a quarter of the electorate a week before the election on November 2.
In the film, Stolen Honour: Wounds That Never Heal, former US prisoners of war claim that their North Vietnamese interrogators used anti-war statements by Mr Kerry (his remarks to Congress in 1971, saying US troops had been responsible for atrocities, which of course they had been) to undermine morale and persuade them to admit war crimes.
if they reportedly define the programme as news, then broadcasting law does not require equal time to be given for a response.
Democratic senators have also said they will appeal to the federal communications commission (FCC), to investigate the transmission of what they describe as free political advertising. The FCC is chaired by Michael Powell, the son of the secretary of state, Colin Powell.
Under US broadcasting rules, the film actually gives airtime to Mr Kerry. Andrew Jay Schwartzman, who heads the Media Access Project watchdog, said: "The way our equal time law works depends on what candidate is appearing on the air - so the equal time rule would run to Bush, not to Kerry. It does not provide Kerry a right to reply."

Americans are the most lied-to people on Earth. The global perception of the "Ugly American" isn't that we are ugly, but that we are so clueless about what is going on in the world, in particular the evils committed by the United States Government using our taxes and children behind our backs. Our government craps on other peoples' nations, while we are told that those people love us, sit up nights to admire us, and lead good moral lives so that when they die, their souls will go to America.
now the motivation of liars is easy to determine, but the motivation of those who like to be lied to is more of a mystery. Some people, it seems, are afraid of the truth and prefer the illusory comfort of lies. Some Americans, for example, simply do not wish to know that in every war we've ever fought, some American troops have committed atrocities and war crimes.

Other Americans appear to want a daddy rather than a political leader. They seem to long for the comfort of a benign, all-powerful father figure who will take care of them. George Bush, as laughable as it is, is trying to play this role of the Great White Father in the White House.
